Optimizing Fertility Naturally Through Manual Therapy
It's an exciting time when a couple decides to add a bundle of joy to their family. Unfortunately this excitement can become clouded by problems of infertility.
Infertility issues have been on the rise in recent years with some studies citing that as many as 1 in 6 couples experience this issue. When a couple faces infertility, many things go through their minds. What is wrong with us? Why is it not working? What are we doing wrong? Issues of infertility can also happen for couples who have already had a baby without any problems but who and are having trouble conceiving once more. So what is the next step? Many couples look into options such as IUI and IVF but they rarely think of manual therapy which has shown higher success rates.
Looking at the Facts
For the first time in history women over 40 are having more children than teen moms. In 2011 more than half of all Canadian births (52%) were to women aged 30 years and up, an increase of 24% since 1981. According to the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society, “A woman’s likelihood of delivering a child through a single cycle of IVF drops to 34% between 35 and 37, 24% between 38 and 40, 11% between 41 and 42, and 6% after 43 years of age.”
This study about manual therapy shows a success rate of 60-80% with between 1-6 sessions of treatment. According to a another study published in Midwifery Today Spring 2013, the highest success rates are documented through the use of Mercier therapy, with 83% of participants achieving pregnancy; 80% exclusively used Mercier Therapy. In the case study 18 women out of 48 achieved pregnancy within the first 6 months and 22 achieved pregnancy within the year. Mercier Therapy is quickly gaining ground to becoming an effective, affordable and natural way of dealing with infertility issues versus other treatments. Education and knowledge are key for couples trying to conceive. There is a better solution out there and that is found in Mercier Therapy!
What is Mercier Therapy?
Mercier Therapy is a deep external pelvic organ visceral manipulation technique used by trained professionals, such as osteopaths, in which the reproductive organs are mobilized and blood flow restored. Organ restrictions are relieved and movement is replenished amongst the organs and surrounding structures to enhance their natural and most optimal functions. The full “Shared Fertility Program” consists of a consultation and 6 weekly sessions which are custom tailored to each individual, and can be used as a stand-alone regimen or in preparation for a medically assisted cycle such as IUI or IVF. There are also intensive options in which the treatments can be done in 3-4 days.
Those who practice Mercier Therapy are already health care providers who have added this technique to their repertoire through an additional advanced professional training certificate.
What else is it used for?
The beauty of the Mercier Therapy is that it can be used for any pelvic issue, whether it be menopause, pelvic pain, sexual trauma, post-partum issues, c-section recovery, and bladder issues to name a few. Additional issues that Mercier Therapy can help with are:
Amenorrhea (lack of period)
Blocked fallopian tubes
Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
Pelvic scarring from previous trauma or surgery (laparoscopy, laparotomy, D&C, LEEP, abortion, cystocele or rectocele repair, caesarean section, or hysterectomy)
PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)
Mercier Therapists are dedicated and passionate about trying to help couples conceive as well as helping women with any of a variety of pelvic issues they might currently be experiencing.
